The next meeting of Salon South West will be held at 6pm, on Wednesday the 1st of December at The Minerva pub on Looe Street. We will be discussing ‘Desert Islands’ by Gilles Deleuze. We will be discussing the text both in relation to The Sutton Youth Initiative at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, and Perimeter at Project Space 11; and in a wider sense. The exhibitions are intended as a multi-site project, both responding to the same mythologised event involving Drake’s Island, Plymouth. Both shows close on the 27th of November.

Close up: the view from here – a discussion led by Kayla Parker

In response to the themes of Project Space 11’s Peepshow presentation of moving image work by members of the Subjectivity and Feminisms Research Group at Chelsea College of Art and Design, Kayla’s talk will draw on work by Sigmund Freud and Luce Irigaray to examine the interplay between ‘I’ and ‘eye’, focusing on embodied visuality and the subjective resonance that is activated by the dynamic perspectives of maker and audience.

Kayla is an artist film-maker who explores subjectivity and sense of place in her practice using photography, sound, film, animation, performance, found objects, drawing, writing, and digital technologies. She is interested in the intersection between the natural world and urban environments, in particular liminal spaces such as the industrial outskirts of the city; and she also produces collaborative work with film-maker and sound artist Stuart Moore.

We will be discussing the text both in relation to Craig’s practice and in a wider sense. Craig will be making work in residence at Project Space 11 from Wednesday the 7th of July till Saturday the 10th of July.

The next Salon South West meeting will be held at The Minerva pub on Looe Street on Friday the 7th May at 6.30pm. We will be discussing the text ‘ The Negation of the Autonomy of Art by the Avant-garde’, from Peter Bürger’s ‘Theory of the Avant-garde’ (chapter three in the Manchester University Press edition).

This is also an opportunity to bring any work, resolved or in progress, that you would like to discuss with the group.
